Marine Explorers Society – 20000 Leagues was founded in 2005 as an NGO with specific focus on scientific research and education in marine biology and ecology. Our research activities take place in the Adriatic Sea, with a lot of projects based in marine protected areas that we collaborate with. Educational activities and projects include presentations, lectures, workshops and beach and sea clean-ups. 20000 Leagues has successfully completed over 30 different scientific projects involving marine habitat mapping, target species monitoring or the development of monitoring plans as well as 30 educational workshops along the Adriatic. The Society is well-connected to other environmental NGOs in the region. Part of our mission is to share knowledge about sustainability and synergy between a traditional and contemporary approach when considering the exploitation of natural resources. We strongly support the involvement of all stakeholders and a mutual, multidisciplinary cooperation in our projects so that the ultimate positive result on the environment is as far-reaching and sustainable. 20000 Leagues has successfully conducted an ESF project „Think blue–Ugljan island“ (2015). EU financed project in collaboration with BIUS focused on strengthening the capacity of the Society to provide education to island communities on topics of sustainable living and development, management of marine natural resources, and awareness of endangered marine species and habitats. In multiple projects through funding programmes such as Interregs we have experience as applying as partners. Projects to join as well as possible partners. Still in development. Since 1999, Xerius has established a strong reputation as a trusted company in the defense, aerospace and industrial sectors.
When facing nearly every major conservation problem from human-wildlife conflict to climate change, monitoring biodiversity and the movement of species is essential to our understanding of the ecosystems we’re protecting.
Building on its core radiofrequency engineering background, Xerius decided in 2016 to create a specific department called XeriusTracking related to environment. Its goal is to support scientists, organisations and governments in their effort to monitor and protect biodiversity. For it, we developed miniaturised devices using GPS, Argos, UHF, GSM and Bluetooth technologies.
Our main solution, BioLoc, comprises miniaturised GPS/UHF and Argos devices which can communicate using both Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) technology and a direct-to-satellite data link (Argos). It is a private and secure LPWAN network using an european certified frequency band.
The use of geofencing to switch to an Argos satellite network when ground-based UHF communication networks are not within reach offers a hybrid Space-LPWAN solution, combining efficiency with global connectivity. The combination of UHF devices communicating with Argos technology is cutting-edge, mirroring state-of-the-art ‘IoT Sat’ systems which aim to provide Argos and UHF ultra-low power communication anywhere on earth. XeriusTracking has developed super-lightweight BioLoc transmitters which can be collared or back-packed on species.
This system provide data for answering to human conflict with wildlife, habitat conservation, climate change,…

GZM associates 41 municipalities of central Silesia (26 urban, 2 urban-rural and 13 rural municipalities), including 13 cities on poviat rights. GZM covers the area of ca. 2,500 km2. The industrial profile of the region comprises of conventional industrial branches as well as of intensively developed modern technologies, ca. automotive, IT and medicine. GZM is inhabited by 2.5 mln of people and generates 8% of GBP. The production of municipal wastes in GZM reaches over 1 mln tonnes of waste (more than 52% of wastes produced by the whole Voivodship).
The main organs of Metropolis are: The Assembly and The Management Board. The Assembly is formed by representatives (mayors) of every associate municipality, who are responsible for the elaboration of the GZM development strategy. As mayors are also responsible for actions realized by their municipalities, hence, GZM is focused on solving issues and development of all associated municipalities. Moreover, GZM Management Board is elected by The Assembly, thus GZM is actually managed by its municipalities. Due to its high urbanization rate and central location, GZM has a significant impact also on other regions and municipalities of Silesian Voivodship.

LIFE-ECOWASTE-BIOSILESIA will demonstrate a territorial cross-sector, large-scale and sustainable system solution for a closed-loop biodegradable kitchen waste through the following activities:

1. We will develop a plan for territorial holistic participatory management, i.e. with participation of many entities from the public, private and scientific sectors. We will implement it in Metropolis GZM, duplicate it to other regions in Poland and abroad, and publish recommendations in the form of a Masterplan for further replication in Europe.
2. We will build a value chain for organic recycling, including:
1) we will enable the cooperation (we will network) of all the necessary parties with the help of Hub4Circularity established within the structures of the Metropolitan Office of GZM;
2) we will create, in practice, a new way of collecting biodegradable kitchen waste so that it can be further reused,
3) we will retrofit, by modifying, for the purposes of the project, two organic existing recycling technology installations for processing of municipal mixed waste (in the region covered by the project) into installations for organic recycling of bio-degradable kitchen waste,
4) we will produce a new waste-based product on remodeled installations that meets high environmental requirements for reuse,
5) we will enable the use of the generated product in the economy by replacing artificial fertilizers with it.

Description of organisation Organisation’s previous experience Looking for … Role of partners sought Description of own project/project sought
FLAG Istrian batana is a local partnership of representatives of the public, economic and civil sector from the area of 10 local self-government units of southern Istria, Croatia that implements the practical application of CLLD as a methodology for integrated territorial development of fisheries communities.
The purpose of FLAG is to improve the quality of life in the fisheries community, strengthen and connect stakeholders, encourage the participation of women, youth and all vulnerable groups in local decision-making, encourage cross-sectoral cooperation, bring together and connect all stakeholders working towards sustainable and balanced development.
The work of FLAG Istrian Batana can be divided into the following thematic areas:
1. Capacity building and networking for effective implementation of CLLD – focus on capacity building for networked and effective stakeholder action and on stabilizing the organization for effective implementation of CLLD.
2. Environment and climate change – the high level of dependence of the fishing community on the sea defines the importance of dealing with the topic of cleaner seas, a balanced ecosystem and protection of marine biodiversity.
3. Short supply chains of local fishery and aquaculture products – fish consumption in Croatia is very low, there is a need to popularize the consumption of local fishery and aquaculture products. It is important to encourage the public to diversify their consumption. In this context, this thematic area emphasizes the seasonality of catches / rearing (highlighting those local fisheries products that are threatened by overfishing), sustainable local catches – the concept of “0 km” from the sea, as well as the promotion of consumption and new species of fish due to their high nutritional value.

PROMIX is a small company with several areas of activity: – production of thermo-formed PET packaging – production of paper tubes – production of kiosks – trade in packaging products For many years, as an expression of its attitude towards the environment, PROMIX has been developing the EKO-BIN project – preventive protection of beaches against small waste pollution. The company is run by two graduate economists, one in the field of finance (Tamara, 29 years old) and the other in the commercial field (Gordan, 59 years old). At the same time, Tamara is the owner of the company ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CENTAR, which manages the private Entrepreneurship Center in Valpovo, where PROMIX and other entrepreneurs operate on 1,800 m2. Gordan has been a private entrepreneur for 29 years with extensive experience in managing business processes. PROMIX is the second company he co-owns. For the first time, PROMIX is considering submitting its EKO-BIN project to the LIFE competition. So far, he has applied only once to the B-LIGHT tender with an innovative production program. Although in the final selection, unfortunately, the evaluators did not understand the significance of the innovative project and its potential. A partner for your project. Associated beneficiary, Coordinating beneficiary, Co-financer Considering the intensity of use of numerous Adriatic and lake beaches during the tourist season and the consumption habits of tourists, the problem of beach pollution with small waste that decomposes slowly or does not break down at all is becoming more and more pronounced, and accumulates on the beach, and partially ends up in the sea and pollutes it. The problem is particularly pronounced on natural beaches (stone, gravel, sand) where concessionaires or utility companies are unable to remove small waste by machine or by hand, or this work is financially unacceptable. Goals: 1. Through systematic and adequate information, influence the development of the ecological attitude of tourists towards the beach and its sustainable use. 2. Use the same info-system to warn tourists about the expected ecological behavior on the beach and the necessity of using the Eco-bin or some other available way of disposing of small waste. 3. With a designed system of acquisition and distribution of eco-bins, enable tourists to use them at the moment of small waste generation, on the beach or any other place in the environment.

Description of organisation Organisation’s previous experience Looking for … Role of partners sought Description of own project/project sought
Our aim is to create a community that should be a catalyst of change and to create an ecosystem based on generating clean energy as a foundation towards creating a climate neutral city, the best possible place to live, work and visit. We believe that this could happen only by public – private collaboration and co-creation. And this is how we are working, as an intersection where public and private needs and curiosity reveal the potential, this potential is creating action, and careful planning of actions is bringing us to creation of the best possible place to live, work and visit.
KLIK is supporting the City of Križevci in their determination to embark on a 100% renewable energy path by developing renewable energy projects and creating climate change resilience of the local community. KLIK is working on raising awareness on energy transition, renovation and RES use benefits and how this fits in the bigger picture of climate neutral Europe, but also offering first advice service and guidelines which will bring other citizens in the energy community. In 2021 KLIK and City of Križevci have established an Energy-climate office, first of its kind in Croatia, which is based on one-stop-shop principles. For now, it’s serving as an education and information office for citizens until a proper business model is developed. It’s also offering help to citizens with acquiring RES subsidies. The goal for the Office is to extend the offers of energy transition actors, entering as a new stakeholder in the value chain of climate transformation process and energy transition to ensure a more resilient structure for all actors of the transition and to promote the whole energy transition initiative.
KLIK has won EUSEW 2023 award in the Local Energy Action category for developing an energy community in Croatia bringing clean energy to citizens.
We are:
● identifying local community needs
● bringing technology in social environment
● supporting the City in energy transition and climate resilience efforts
● educating the local community on RES and climate change mitigation
● empowering the local community through collaboration, co-creation and capacity building
.
Relevant previous projects:
Future cities of South East Europe (2020-): an international project supported by EIT Climate-KIC. Within this initiative, five cities (Skopje, Maribor, Sarajevo, Križevci and Niš), will try to achieve the EU goal of reaching climate neutrality as a continent by transforming cities and communities into climate resilient.
Compile (2018-2022): The main aim of COMPILE is to demonstrate the opportunities of energy islands for decarbonisation of energy supply, community building and creating environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
Living streets (2021): City of Križevci, along with Poreč, was selected at the Public Invitation of the Terra HUB Associationfor the implementation of the living streets experiment within the EUKI Living streets project funded by the European Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.KLIK was subcontracted by the City to implement the activities and manage the experiment because of its strong knowledge and experience with citizen engagement. KLIK has successfully managed the marketing, implementation, dissemination and further engagement of the citizens included in the experiment.
Powerpoor (2021-2023): is an international project of 8 pilot countries and 14 partners. The main aim of the POWERPOOR project is to provide a platform for the exchange of experiences and knowledge, facilitate the verification of smaller energy efficiency measures and the installation of RES, increase the active participation of citizens through the establishment of energy communities and through alternative financing schemes.
City of Križevci is one of the pilot cities that established an Energy poverty centre which is being managed by KLIK cooperative. Through the Centre, relevant data will be collected from the households in the community and educational programme will be conducted to educate volunteers on tools for mitigation of energy poverty.
InnoFinRES (2022): is a project focused on innovative financial models to support a transition to renewable energy sources in North Macedonia. Through the process of co-developing a localized impact-investment financing model with relevant stakeholders, leveraging crowdsourcing or similar mechanisms to offset the costs of and enabling local government to reinvest savings in RES- transition, this project has developed novel financing instruments and business models.
